Privacy Policy

The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1978 is committed to protecting the privacy and personal information of our members. We collect only the information necessary to provide representation, communicate effectively, and meet regulatory requirements, in accordance with British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

We are transparent about why and how we collect, use, and disclose personal information, and we obtain consent where required. Personal information is handled in a manner that respects confidentiality, security, and accuracy.

Definitions

  • Personal Information: Information about an identifiable individual, not including contact information.

  • Contact Information: Information that enables an individual to be contacted at a place of business or their home, including name, position, telephone number, address, and email. Contact information is not covered by this policy or PIPA.

  • Privacy Officer: The individual responsible for ensuring CUPE Local 1978 complies with this policy and PIPA. If necessary, the President or Vice President may act as the Privacy Officer, although this is not their primary role. The Privacy Officer serves as the primary point of contact for all privacy related questions or concerns.

Collecting Personal Information

We collect personal information only for the following purposes:

  • Verifying identity

  • Identifying member preferences

  • Sending union membership information

  • Contacting members

  • Meeting regulatory requirements

The local union is required to communicate information about bargaining, ratification, and executive board member elections. A member may unsubscribe, through their email provider, from required and optional emails from Local 1978. When personal information is collected, we clearly communicate the purpose and obtain consent where required. Members may request access to, or correction of, their personal information, or ask questions about our privacy practices. We regularly review our privacy practices to ensure ongoing compliance and protection of our members' information.
